Daddy's Money is The Mood’s second single of 2024, which is catchy and satirical middle finger towards a privileged section of their own generation who are accustomed to getting everything handed to them. Inspired by real people who the band have had the displeasure to meet, the lyrics humorously depict the world of spoilt young musician, whose career, friendships and night life are only propped up by the seemingly endless reservoir of Daddy's Money, and without it, they’d be nothing. The chorus is a catchy refrain, driving home the central theme of the song. The verses may delve into specific scenarios, highlighting everything wrong with the subject’s way of living. The middle 8 section even features a joke rant by lead singer Dan, where he puts on a fake accent and is pitch shifted up in order to pastiche the cliché middle class gap year traveller who “found themselves”.
Instrumentally, the song is a nod towards Garage Rock and British Indie Rock, with a feast of rich guitar tones! Chords are played by scratchy overdriven guitars reminiscent of The Wombats or The Libertines and energetic drums are a nod to early Arctic Monkeys. The lead guitar features experimental delay effects, which mirror the same notes as the chorus melody, making it even catchier. There are also several modulated guitar riffs which could even be considered Skater Rock, similar to early Fu Manchu records and the soundtrack to the Skate computer game.
With a blend of humour, attitude and a toe-tapping rhythm, Daddy's Money invites listeners to take a playful look at the often-overlooked aspects of privilege and entitlement in a society where wealth and indulgence go hand in hand.
